📖 Romans 1:16
“For I am not ashamed of the gospel, because it is the power of God that brings salvation to everyone who believes…”
The Big Idea
The Gospel is not advice but news. Good news. It’s the announcement that God has made a way for sinners to be saved, through the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ. The Gospel isn’t something we grow out of, but it’s the foundation we grow from and the well that empowers us.
Biblical Blueprint
🔹 Greek: Euangelion (εὐαγγέλιον) — “Good News”
In the ancient world, euangelion referred to a royal announcement of victory or a new king’s arrival. In Scripture, it refers to the saving work of Jesus Christ and the call to respond in faith and repentance.
📖 Mark 1:15 – “The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand; repent and believe in the gospel.”
🔹 The 4 Core Movements of the Gospel:
1. God – The Holy Creator
God created us for relationship with Him. He is holy, just, and loving. He is the author of life and the rightful King. (Genesis 1:1, Psalm 24:1, Revelation 4:11)
2. Man – The Rebellion
Every human has sinned and fallen short of God’s glory. Our sin separates us from Him and deserves judgment. (Romans 3:23, Romans 6:23)
3. Jesus – The Rescue
Jesus, fully God and fully man, lived the perfect life we couldn’t live and died the death we deserved. On the cross, He took our place and three days later, He rose in victory defeating death and sin. (2 Corinthians 5:21, Romans 5:8, 1 Corinthians 15:3–4)
4. Response – The Call
Salvation is a gift received by grace through faith. We are called to repent (turn from sin) and believe (trust fully in Jesus). (Ephesians 2:8–9, Acts 2:38, Romans 10:9–10)
Common Misunderstandings
- ❌ “The Gospel is about being a good person.”
→ No — it’s about Jesus being perfect in our place and saving us by grace. - ❌ “The Gospel is just for unbelievers.”
→ False — believers need the Gospel every day. It fuels growth, humility, and hope. - ❌ “The Gospel is God helping those who help themselves.”
→ No — the Gospel is God saving those who couldn’t help themselves.
🎯 The Gospel isn’t about what you do for God but it’s about what He did for you.
Why It Matters
If you get the Gospel wrong, you get everything else wrong.
It’s not just the starting line but it’s the entire race.
- It frees you from guilt and performance
- It gives you a new identity
- It fuels obedience out of love, not fear
- It gives you eternal security and present purpose
The Gospel is not just about getting you into heaven; it’s about bringing heaven into you.
Application Questions
- Have I truly received the Gospel or just admired it from a distance?
- Am I trying to earn what God has already finished in Christ?
- How does the Gospel reshape how I see myself, others, and my purpose?
Closing Prayer
Jesus, thank You for the Gospel that is Your life, death, and resurrection in my place. I confess my sin and turn to You in faith. Help me never lose the wonder of grace. Let the Gospel not just be something I believe but something that shapes everything I do. Amen.
