The Cost of a Godly Life

📖 Acts 20:22-24

22 “And now, compelled by the Spirit, I am going to Jerusalem, not knowing what will happen to me there. 23 I only know that in every city the Holy Spirit warns me that prison and hardships are facing me. 24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace. 24 However, I consider my life worth nothing to me; my only aim is to finish the race and complete the task the Lord Jesus has given me—the task of testifying to the good news of God’s grace.

One of my favorite verses is Acts 20:24 because it beautifully captures the deep steadfastness and boldness Paul had toward his God given calling. Even though Paul knew that persecution, hardship, and suffering awaited him, he didn’t shy away or retreat. Instead, he boldly followed the leading of the Spirit with unwavering obedience. This is a powerful example of faith in action as Paul didn’t avoid the storm, he faced it head-on because he trusted that the Lord would carry him through.

This verse reveals the mindset and priorities Paul held close: his life’s worth was not in comfort or safety, but in finishing the race God set before him and faithfully proclaiming the good news of grace. It challenges each of us to ask: Are we living with that same single-minded devotion to God’s call?

Like Paul, we are invited to embrace endurance in faith, courage in sacrifice, and an unwavering commitment to sharing the gospel, no matter the cost or the challenges ahead. We can power through the trials ahead because the Lord promises His presence and protection as we walk through the waters and fires of life:

📖 Isaiah 43:2

“When you pass through the waters, I will be with you;
and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you.
When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned;
the flames will not set you ablaze.”

And Paul reminds us that no matter what happens whether life or death that Christ is our everything. That is our true value for our lives here on earth! He captures the heart of a believer whose identity and purpose are fully wrapped up in Jesus. Living means serving Christ, sharing His love, and reflecting His grace. But even death is not something to fear because it means being with Christ in full glory, which is the ultimate gain. This outlook on life frees us from the fear of hardship or loss because we know our lives are in God’s hands. It calls us to live courageously with a heavenly focus, letting every moment, every challenge, and every triumph point others to the hope found in Christ.

📖 Philippians 1:20-21

“I eagerly expect and hope that I will in no way be ashamed, but will have sufficient courage so that now as always Christ will be exalted in my body, whether by life or by death. For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.”

Paul’s outlook profoundly reframes our identity in Christ and clarifies our mission on earth. We are called to be ambassadors of Christ, entrusted with the message of reconciliation. As ambassadors, every word we speak, every action we take, and every sacrifice we make carries eternal significance. This truth compels us to prioritize the gospel above all else, trusting that God’s transformative power shines through our faithful obedience.

📖 2 Corinthians 5:16-21

“16 So from now on we regard no one from a worldly point of view. Though we once regarded Christ in this way, we do so no longer.17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here! 18 All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: 19 that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ, not counting people’s sins against them. And he has committed to us the message of reconciliation.20 We are therefore Christ’s ambassadors, as though God were making his appeal through us. We implore you on Christ’s behalf: Be reconciled to God. 21 God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.”

Following Paul’s example means acknowledging that pursuing God’s calling involves suffering and hardship. Paul himself knew that trials awaited him, yet he chose obedience over comfort. The pursuit of a Godly life is not promised to be easy and standing firm in faith will bring opposition, sacrifice, and pain.

📖 2 Timothy 3:10-12

“You, however, have followed my teaching, my conduct, my aim in life, my faith, my patience, my love, my steadfastness, 11 my persecutions and sufferings that happened to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra—which persecutions I endured; yet from them all the Lord rescued me. 12 Indeed, all who desire to live a godly life in Christ Jesus will be persecuted,”

But suffering is not without purpose. It refines our character, strengthens our faith, and deepens our reliance on God’s grace. As Paul endured hardships for the sake of the gospel, we too are called to persevere, trusting that God uses even our struggles to accomplish His good work in and through us.

📖 Romans 5:3-5

“Not only so, but we also glory in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not put us to shame, because God’s love has been poured out into our hearts through the Holy Spirit, who has been given to us.”

Jesus warned His followers that they would face trials, yet He also promised His presence and victory in the midst of it all. So, when we encounter suffering on the path of obedience, we can find courage knowing we do not walk alone and that our suffering is never wasted.

📖 Matthew 5:10-11

“10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

11 “Blessed are you when people insult you,persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me. 12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.

May this truth encourage and strengthen you today as we learn from Paul’s unwavering commitment to God’s calling, courage in the face of trials, Christ centered identity, perspective on life and death, and living as an Ambassadors of Reconciliation. Let’s run our race with endurance, keeping our eyes fixed on Jesus, and boldly living out the calling He’s placed on our lives as faithful ambassadors of Christ!
